MPA's strategic approach to a first floor & basement space in an 1864 industrial building began with a 12’ x 20’ excavation of the first floor, as well as the removal of a 12’ wide segment of the rear yard extension. The result is an interior courtyard living space that opens up to a back garden with a 12’ x 26’ high window. These large scale interventions, including exposure of the continuous brick wall leading from front to back and construction of the ceiling as a unified element, allow light to penetrate deep into the domestic spaces. House and office are both organized on three levels, including a mezzanine.
