The existing Elmhurst Library is the second busiest circulating library within the Queens Library network. The new Elmhurst Library more than doubles the size of the existing building, with all program spaces receiving natural light and air, and views. It will provide state-of-the-art library services and offer to invite, comfortable spaces with careful consideration of material qualities and how they relate to durability, maintenance, and acoustics. The new library will introduce the latest technology standards while engaging the mass of larger contemporary buildings and relating to the smaller scale fabric of Queen’s historical buildings. The building maximizes park space and creates a new presence on Broadway. Transparency at the center of the building provides a visual connection between the park at the front and garden at the back.
