Paul Bauer

As the design leader for many of the firm’s large infrastructure projects, Paul Bauer takes an iterative and research-based approach to architecture. He views the highly-specific set of requirements that guide infrastructure design as an opportunity for discovery and collaboration. Having studied architecture from an engineering standpoint, Paul is particularly attuned to the systems that make infrastructure projects function—a perspective that allows him to establish a firm understanding of a project’s goals among all participants.

Paul’s commitment to enhancing the built environment is further expressed through his professional affiliations, including the AIA New York Chapter’s Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Paul has studied at the Ecole National Superior Des Beaux Arts in Paris and holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Richard Dattner

Richard Dattner founded the firm in 1964 with a commitment to civic architecture. Under his leadership and creative direction, Dattner Architects has designed a wide variety of award-winning projects.

Richard attended the Architectural Association in London and received his Bachelor of Architecture from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has taught design at Cooper Union, City College of New York and University of Wisconsin and has often been a visiting design critic and lecturer. He was Vice President of the AIA New York Chapter, former Trustee of the City Club of New York, and served on the boards of The Bureau of Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment of the National Research Council and the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission.

AIA New York Chapter awarded Richard the Medal of Honor, the highest honor the Chapter can bestow for distinguished architecture. Richard received the Thomas Jefferson Award from the American Institute of Architects in recognition of his significant contributions to public architecture. He is the author of Design for Play and Civil Architecture–The New Public Infrastructure.

Jeffrey Dugan

Jeffrey Dugan is motivated by a deep-seated interest in the development and improvement of quotidian urban spaces. From large projects that involve major components of a city’s infrastructure, such as rail and air transportation, to educational spaces, community facilities and supportive housing, Jeff is committed to creating positive experiences for urban citizens. As a musician, he has developed an acuteness for improvisation and collaboration, which he brings to his role as a designer, mentor, and an orchestrator of multifarious projects.

Jeff is actively involved in the American Institute of Architects, where he co-chairs the New York Chapter’s Transportation & Infrastructure Committee. He studied at Georgia State University and holds an Associate of Applied Science in Architectural Technology from Southern Illinois University.

Beth Greenberg

Beth Greenberg has managed an extensive variety of high-profile projects in over 30 years at Dattner Architects. From educational spaces, health clinics, and community facilities, to large scale urban design, housing, and transportation projects–she brings clarity and purpose to the process. Her architectural approach is guided by her multi-disciplinary background; an ability to translate complex sets of needs, contexts and requirements; and an innate understanding of how users move through a space.

Beth is actively involved in AIA New York. She has been a board member, the Housing Committee chair, and a member of the Oculus and Nominating committees. She holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Colorado and a Bachelor of Science in French and Dance Education from the University of Wisconsin.

Daniel Heuberger

Daniel Heuberger’s design leadership is informed by a belief in architecture’s broad public mission. Through an active engagement in each phase of design, from concept through execution, he directs institutional, educational, housing, and planning projects. As a mentor and consensus-builder, he facilitates dialogue among design professionals and clients, enabling collaboration and unifying project goals.

An active member of the AIA New York, Daniel served on the School Construction Authority Task Force, Design Awards Committee, and the Oculus Committee. He has lectured on design to professional groups, including the US Green Building Council, Society of University and College Planners, and the AIA. Daniel has been a guest critic at several schools.

He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Columbia University and a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

Gia Mainiero

A born-and-raised New Yorker, Gia Mainiero has always been captivated by the intricate and interrelated systems that make urban life possible. Her determination to garner a big picture understanding of how things work has led her to manage many of the firm’s infrastructure and transportation projects.

Gia strives to provoke others to notice and engage with vital, yet often underappreciated services and building types. Her young daughter has bolstered her passion for public architecture and strengthened her commitment to creating inspiring, sustainable infrastructure for future generations.

Gia holds a Bachelor of Architecture from The Cooper Union, Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture.

Ruth Ro

Ruth Ro’s interest in real estate politics and her background as both an economic development analyst and painter have shaped her understanding of consensus-building and its importance within urban architecture. Whether through her art exhibit, “Icons of the Meatpacking District,” a collection of portraits that presented key players in the neighborhood’s transformation, or through managing large-scale mixed-use projects, Ruth is naturally adept at bringing people together and facilitating dialogue. Her approach to working with clients and consultants is characterized by a commitment to problem solving and the ability to aid communication between participants, successfully integrating multiple perspectives.

Ruth holds a Master of Architecture from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from New York University.

Catherine Selby

Catherine Selby’s extensive experience designing and managing healthcare projects has informed her ability to find inspired architectural solutions within tight spatial constraints and technical requirements, rendering her a proficient planner. She now applies these skills to a diverse range of projects including supportive housing, educational, healthcare, and institutional spaces.

She believes that excellence in design results from many iterations, and she embraces both the challenges and feedback loop generated by projects with limited means and budgets. She is particularly adept at working with non-profit clients to achieve their aspirations without compromising design excellence.

Catherine holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University and a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University. Her background includes art history, commercial art, advertising, and sculpture.

Kirsten Sibilia

Kirsten Sibilia is a vocal advocate for the value of design. As managing partner, she is focused on the firm’s health and vitality. Her design training and entrepreneurial spirit have allowed her to approach the business side of the practice as a design project; with each initiative, she reflects the firm’s commitment to improving public life, through the creation of resilient and sustainable urban density.

Her enthusiasm for supporting architectural practice manifests in involvement with several leading industry organizations including the Beverly Willis Architectural Foundation, ULI NY’s Design Awards Committee, and the New York Building Congress’ Architects Leadership Council. Kirsten holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts from the New School.

William Stein

Throughout his 41 years at Dattner Architects, Bill Stein has steadfastly advocated for socially conscious and sustainable architecture. His record of distinguished public projects and professional leadership exemplifies a commitment to design excellence and responsiveness to communities. Bill is particularly skilled at building consensus among stakeholders to resolve planning, design, budgetary, and regulatory challenges.

He is a board member of the Citizens Housing & Planning Council, an advisory board member of the NY Housing Conference, and has been a committee chair for three cycles of NYC building code revisions. He served as President of the Center for Architecture Foundation, Vice President of the AIA New York, and has taught at Pratt Institute. Bill earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from City University of New York and was honored with the CCNY Architecture Alumni Career Achievement Award.

John Woelfling

John Woelfling is committed to creating sustainable and resource-efficient designs, using an integrated and holistic approach that reduces impacts on the environment and positively effects the health and comfort of building occupants. He leverages his broad experiences working across project typologies, from education and recreation to healthcare and infrastructure, to inform his leadership of the firm’s mixed-use residential projects. A recognized Passive House expert, John’s focus on sustainable design practices is guided by proactive education of evolving green technologies and incorporating them into his design work.

He frequently lectures about affordable housing and sustainability, speaking at the Center for Architecture, AIA NYS, Urban Green and GreenBuild, Forum for Urban Design, Reimagine Conference, and the PHIUS Passive House Conference. John holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech.
