This project is driven by the homeowners’ desire to create a beachside retreat with all the amenities needed by a family that loves to entertain. Take into consideration that this is a place where a daytime trip to the beach is just as likely as sunset cocktails, and the mix desired is a relaxed sophistication.

Indeed, this project could easily have been called “Play House” for the light-hearted living to be contained within its walls. We have loved imagining all the places that might be perfect for a nap, or a party, for that matter. It all begins with the entrance across a Zen meditation garden that will capture the onshore breezes and wrap around the side of the house. At the rear of the lot, a swimming pool stretches from side-to-side and opens to the main level. A wall of sliding doors opens most of this level and creates a flow from the front living room, through the kitchen and eating areas, out to the side yard and rear pool for seamless indoor/outdoor living.

Double-height spaces open the living room and dining room to soaring ceilings. A raised mezzanine will be a retreat for the clients to catch a game on the television or to watch the sun lower over the ocean.

Many of Sander Architects’ trademark green strategies and materials employed in the construction of this residence make the Hermosa Beach House a place to celebrate life and the earth on many levels.
