Poised on the western side of New York’s beloved Bryant Park, this plaza sits at the corner of 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue next to a 630-foot-tall skyscraper. ABB collaborated with MdeAS Architects to create a space that would invite public enjoyment and activity, while seamlessly incorporating existing infrastructure on site.

The associated 16,000 SF through-block plaza sits to the west of the building. The original plaza was raised several feet above and had a skewed relationship to the adjacent sidewalks. The existing substructure was selectively altered to create forecourts to the plaza at street level and to reduce the grade differential to the upper plaza on 41st and 42nd Streets. This was done to create a more seamless relationship with the public sidewalks and to invite activity into the plaza. A palette of rich materials was employed including large granite slab pavements and steps, stainless steel edging, movable furniture, and custom-designed benches in granite and hardwood. A tapestry-style planting design made up of 18 single-stem birch trees and understory woodland type plants covers both levels.
