Frederick Phillips and Associates

As seen in the genealogy section of the Art Institute of Chicago's Chicago Architecture and Design 1923-1993 (Prestel-Verlag), Frederick Phillips and Associates (FPA) is generationally connected to Harry Weese and Associates, where Phillips apprenticed in the mid-seventies. Edward Bennett, Burnham's partner in the Plan of Chicago. Bennett's son Edward Bennett, Jr. is Phillips' stepfather. Edward Bennett, Jr. (son of Edward Bennett, Burnham's partner in the 1909 Plan of Chicago), a modernist trained under Gropius at Harvard in the late forties, had an influence on Phillips, as did Weese, and earlier, Louis Kahn at Penn, where Phillips received a Master of Architecture degree.

As seen under Specialties Frederick Phillips and Associates is a small but diverse practice engaging in a broad range of building types in the United States and abroad. The firm's work includes, but is not limited to, residential, theater, library, office, retail, and recreational design. Work of the firm has won numerous Distinguished Building Awards from the American Institute of Architects, Record Houses Awards from Architectural Record, and many other national awards. His firm's work has been extensively published and exhibited nationally and internationally.

Phillips' current projects include the Deerpath Farm conservation development 30 miles north of Chicago, a water-based Great Lakes recreational and entertainment facility, and residences in the Chicago area. Frederick Phillips teaches a modular housing studio at IIT in Chicago and is working on modular housing in Chicago and in the Burgundy region of France.
